History of Home School Law

Home School Legal Defense has listed South Carolina as a state with moderate requirements or regulations. South Carolina Home Educators Association points out the distinction between districts and their attitudes and in some cases their lack of willingness to cooperate.

SCHEA: The attitudes and behaviors concerning the South Carolina education system may appear confusing. Why do home school families get treated so differently from district to district? Have you heard about the law of compulsory attendance? Compulsory school age in South Carolina is five years of age before September first until the seventeenth birthday or, graduation from high school. Five year olds may be excused from kindergarten with submission of written notice to the school district.
