Selecting Curricula

As residents of South Carolina, we need to understand the home school laws concerning curriculum. SC Code of Law states the curriculum includes, but is not limited to, the basic instructional areas of reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies, and in grades seven through twelve, composition and literature.

Often times we are asked, which curriculum do we recommend? As a rule, to avoid placing limitations on another’s home school program, we try to steer clear from recommending a particular curriculum.

Rather, we point parents toward a list of resources and recommend they do as much research as possible for themselves. We know from experience, parents are the best choice when it comes to making decisions involving their children.

Of course, when a family is under duress and needs to make a decision as soon as possible, we help them by significantly narrowing their choices. Otherwise, for the most part, we try to help parents get to their next level of understanding until they eventually feel comfortable making choices on their own.
